Cavalry captain Gabriel Lacey returns to Regency London from the Napoleonic wars, burned out, fighting melancholia, his career ended. His interest is piqued when he learns of a missing girl, possibly kidnapped by a prominent member of Parliament. Lacey's search for the young woman leads to murder, corruption, and dealings with a leader of the underworld. At the same time, he struggles with his transition from a soldier's life to the civilian world, redefining his role with his former commanding officer, and making new friends--from the top of society to the street girls of Covent Garden.

WONDERFUL!

1816, London. A former captain that fought against Napolean;s troops in Spain and Portugal. London is presented in both the have and have not side of life. The Prince Regent is mentioned as the son of George III, the mad king.

The mystery and the characters are compelling and intriguing, as well as being terrific writing. I can hardly wait to read another.

Wonderful story

An excellent read! I liked the good guys, abhored the bad guys, and found those hovering in between to interesting and entertaining enough to be satisfied with their depiction. The plot was well done with enough turns and sub plots to keep the story entertaining and moving along.

Well done

Writing is an art, and this work is skillfully done. I love the characters who are multi-layered. The plot twists and turns with secrets revealed to the reader as she goes. One secret is left to discover, but it is not a cliff hanger. The story comes to a satisfying conclusion. Well done.

The Hanover Square Affair

This book was not my normal choice,I don't like books that have murder, kidnapping of young woman. In this story I glad the villain got what he deserved. Some one else might like this book.

Great book and wonderful series

I love the captain Lacey series not just because the books are well written and well plotted. I think it’s the fact that every book in the series adds more interesting permanent characters to the unfolding story of the rise of Gabriel Lacey. I do love a series that allows growth and development of the main characters.

I will have to admit to reading them all back to back. At 15 books and counting I must applaud the author for creating a unique book and plot every time. Every book is interesting and a great read and not following any plot formula. That’s great writing!
