I can’t believe I read the whole thing.

Truly, this book left me rather nauseated.

I like fantasy and romance, including dragons and reverse harem. This was neither.

The irrationality began with the FMC. We are told that Layla is fascinating, wonderful, and cosmopolitan, but she never demonstrates those characteristics. Instead she behaves as a foul-mouthed, out-of-control, utterly selfish teenager. Layla, for all her credentials, seemingly can’t get a decent job and is willing to sponge off her friends rather than sell any of the tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of jewelry she inherited. She can’t make up her mind with any finality but changes with the direction of the wind. Yet it’s her way or the highway; others simply must keep up.

She not only sins, however; she is also sinned against. Her “love interests” omit vital information, lie, and manipulate. The story fairly stinks with deceit. Even more, there is a lot of dubious consent involved—to the point I would call it sexual assault—and even rape in an instance. Ugh. Just ugh. But she is quick to forgive, so it’s all okay, right?

So the characters were a turn-off for me. The plot may have had some promise, but it was defeated by the writing style. The author suffered from purple prose and repetition. And repetition. Not to mention repetition. The fantastical and obscenely wealthy world that Ms. Ward sought to build was flat, lacked an expansive imagination, and seemed to have a heavy dose of “Pretty Woman” to it.

On the positive side, I did like the unique powers some of her side characters manifested—unusual and unique. And her grammar was fine, with no egregious errors.

Alas, that was about it. I bought the first three books of this series on sale—thank the gods—but I think I’ll be returning the other two.

Worth the read

I love shifter romances and this 1 is definitely a different type of shifter romance. I almost did not finish the book because it was so different. However, I'm glad that I did. This was really a good read and I excited to continue reading the remaining books.

Super well developed

This book was super well developed, it has a well set background with really good world building. The book got super wordy and I don’t think that some of the points were necessary. I wasn’t sure how I felt about the main lead going back to her ex in the beginning. I felt like there was so much emphasis on scents that I got pretty sick of reading about her orange peel scent (cue eye roll). Aside from that the male lead seems like a total a-hole and I’m a little disappointed.

Too much detail. Too repetitive.

Way too much detail. Way too repetitive. Its 90% repetitive details and 10% story. It takes her five pages to describe one person, or place or thing... surprised the author didn't describe what the characters farts smelled like too.... and repetition... ok, we know this guy smells like orange and jasmine, but every other page is letting us know this. (That is just one example) I stopped reading about halfway through. I tried, really. I just couldn't continue.

Good story, unlikable characters

So, I really struggled to finish this. I did not like Layla. At all. I found her character wishywashy, bratty and generally unpleasant. The story line was interesting and unique though so there was potential. Unfortunately, I wont be reading any of the others.

Brilliant New World!

A unique multi dimensional world elaborately staged and developed. The characters are very personable and easily become familiar only to surprise you time after time. Be prepared for late nights or a cozy weekend since it is almost impossible to put down.
