Trigger warning

Not what I expected at all.I thought it was going to be a romance novel - not even close. Locked in a dungeon and having horrible things happened to you is not the reading escape I was looking for...pass on this

A great book

I decided to take a journey through another series by Charlotte Byrd and I once again was not disappointed. It is different than the previous series I read but definitely has the same twists and turns that she does so well. Can't wait to read the second one.

A form of arranged marriage to the King of York

Lavish Lies is about men who kidnapped women bring them to an island on York to compete for the love of a man. But first they are disciplined and trained to obey.
Everly was captured, kidnapped, and imprisoned in a luxurious home. Before she was kidnapped she worked at a job she hated making very little money to cover rent and bills. She wanted to become a writer eventhough she studied to become a psychologist. While waiting in her prison she longs for that boring job because at least she had her free will.

Every is an insecure gullible twenty-five year old living in Philadelphia. She worries about her weight, doesn’t like her body, and shies away from compliments. She meets a man named Jamie who takes her to a party where she’s taken to a remote location away from home.
The description about Lavish Lies is vague leaving out who the main characters are. Well I’m here to tell you that Everly is the main character. As for the mysterious male character it must be Easton as his name is the first mentioned in the opening prologue.

I found the beginning too far fetched. The way Everly met Jamie inviting her to a party for a first date wasn’t the transition I expected in this type of trope. The only indication regarding the type of story this is the reference about a prisoner and contestants in some game to win the love of this guy.
I’m not exactly sure what the concept of this book was trying to accomplish but I must say it didn’t progress quickly enough with all the minute details crowding the storyline. This was one of those on-the-nose narratives where every minute detail was included. These details didn’t advance the plot. In fact, I skimmed through all these tedious details.
This is supposed to be a dark romance but all I can do is laugh at the absurdity of these scenes. I’m quite familiar with dark exotic taboo story’s but this one is lacking. It’s missing that deep rooted fear a character should be faced with when put in this situation.
I knew from the beginning this book wasn’t going to score higher than a 1 star. The writing style is not dialogue driven and the storyline is mediocre. Here is what bothers me...”he starts to do unspeakable things to her.” Here is some advice: If you want to write a dark romance then you need to cross the line by writing all the painful elements of what Everly is faced with. I need to experience the fear and pain. That statement told me nothing except to insert my imagination. This isn’t the time to have a reader insert his or her imagination. How am I to believe how scared Everly is if the author can’t create the scene for me to visualize? There is no emotion behind these words. They are just words taken from the dictionary with no feelings to back them up. Here’s another example:”It’s a terrible, horrific place from which I yearn to escape.” Please Explain in better detail what makes it horrific and terrible aside from saying the words. I need to become engulfed and encapsulated by the characters fear in order to believe what is being written.
I did like the way Charlotte delivered the story in parts that was helpful.
