I am not usually a science fiction fan but decided to try this book & it took a couple of chapters to get into it then I was hooked & couldn't stop reading. I especially like the emotive way of speech from the Shon characters
The Trial of Tompa Lee
by Edward Hoornaert
Only her enemies can save her from alien injustice.
A WOMAN
Tompa Lee is a homeless 'street meat' who has clawed her way up to the bottom-most rung of the Space Navy . . . but her dream job plummets into a nightmare when she's framed for mass murder on an alien planet.
A MAN
Dante Roussel is the Navy policemen who surrenders Tompa to the Shons . . . but he is horrified to learn that their justice requires trial-by-combat, so Tompa must conquer three hundred accusers.
AN ALIEN
Awmit is an old, lower-class Shon who is the sole witness to Tompa's innocence . . . but to prove it, he must find the valor and the strength to fight to the death at her side.
AN UNFAIR TRIAL
Can Tompa learn to trust and love not only a member of the alien race that wants to slaughter her . . . but also the policeman who betrayed her to cruel alien justice?
Reviews
I wasn't sure how to rate this book--a 4 or a 5. Parts made me angry at certain characters. But when I consider how many emotions the author put me through, I decided a 5 was appropriate. The heroine wasn't likeable at the beginning. I wanted to kick her to speak up for herself. I know she had a good reason, in that it never did any good before. She's too defensive, and suspicious, and doesn't speak when she should. The author did a good job with her rationale, and there was a good character arc. I put the book down when I got to the "trial." I wasn't sure I could read that. But the author did such a good job enticing me back, I had to keep reading. Loved the secondary character, an alien named Awmit. He was pivotal in helping her understand her trial as well as the other aliens. I had mixed feelings about the ending. [no spoiler] Part made me upset with the author; part made for a satisfying ending.
Great story, terrific reading, wonderful mix of good characters fighting the bad. Only a handful of humans but a larger number of aliens.
I gave this four stars because it was a well-written story however I really didn't like the story was went through it but it wasn't what I was thinking it wasn't what I was expecting it was surprising it was still well written very well written but maybe it was someone else I did enjoy it to what degree I just wasn't into this particular story
After awhile I started thinking in the language of the aliens, that is how engrossed I was into this book.
This is a good read. There is always something happening, and it`s not all good all the time. If you like sci-fi, this is for you.
Built a believable world and filled out the characters well.
Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Very well written, with plenty of action through out. I really enjoyed the character interactions that brought the story alive.
