Graham paints a wonderful detailed but not boring picture of a seaside, almost hidden village, in Newfoundland so you feel you are there following Carmel, the main and recurring character. She’s new to the village, meeting some of the close knit residents and learning their unique characteristics.
She finds a body, throat slit. Could the murderer be one of her new acquaintances or an outsider?
Excellent writing that kept enticing me to read more!!
The Cut Throat: A Carmel McAlistair Mystery
by Liz Graham
"Reminds me a BBC mystery - brought to life in the new world!"
Carmel McAlistair thinks she’s found the perfect retreat in St. Jude Without, Newfoundland. Until the murders begin, that is. Could the killer be the sexy fisherman she’s fallen for, or any of the strange characters who hang out in the old church which is now the local pub? And are those fairies in the graveyard? This tiny hidden village holds its secrets close, and Carmel as an outsider is the only person who can help DI Darrow find the murderer. Can he save her from being the next victim? And will he help salvage her heart?
This humorous mystery with a touch of supernatural is the first in the Carmel McAlistair series set in Newfoundland, that wild and wonderful island at the edge of the North Atlantic Ocean.
Reviews
Once again a great book from Liz Graham and I am loving this series. It is the kind of book that you want to read in one night to find out who did it !!!!
Well I'm from Newfoundland and even from Portugal Cove - which is a real place adjacent to the fictional location of this book. It was interesting and funny and a bit creepy. The characters were certainly of this place, but drawn with a sly original twist — all their foibles coming free. . A wonderful romp of a mystery novel. Looking forward to more!
Good golly - I can't believe all the rave reviews on this one. This book got great reviews on Amazon and not too bad on Goodreads. Should have checked with Goodread's reviews before I started this book - and didn't finish. I even went to Amazon once to make sure I was reading the same mystery. I'm over 15% done and nothing has happened yet. I've read about the island and it's lovely description, a problem on the island of a beer shortage and fights in the town, of blueberry picking on a very steep hill, and kids playing in a graveyard at night behind Carmel McAlistair's rented cottage. I decided to give up when I read on Goodreads that there is paranormal and romance in this story. I normally don't care to have paranormal and a heavy mix of romance mixed in with my mysteries so when I found that out, I decided to quit. I knew already that I wouldn't read anymore in this series. Just wasn't my cup of tea. (less)
Great mystery with paranormal happenings and a dash of romance. There were several red herings mixed throughout the book so the culprit was not obvious . The book is highly descriptive so you get a good feel for the location and the colorful characters. Ready for book 2.
