Book One of The Guardians Series◆◆◆  2016 FINALIST, THE DAPHNE DU MAURIER AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN MYSTERY/SUSPENSE ◆◆◆"You're a jackass."Will turned that pale gaze on her, and she cursed the color that immediately flushed her cheeks.  “Because I told him the truth?”“Because you’re a jackass.”  She looked at Rafe. “Don’t worry.  He’s all bark.”“Am I now?”She heard the taunt in those words—her cheeks were on fire—but she didn’t deign to look at him.  “Like one of those little purse dogs.  All yap.”Rafe appeared skeptical.  “He looks like a wolf.”“Woof,” Will said. ◆◆◆Cheyenne Elias has inherited a child. A boy she doesn’t know and doesn’t particularly want; a boy whose mother was once Cheyenne’s most hated person in the world. There are a million reasons to walk away: her anger, her past, her certainty that there is nothing benevolent in this act by a woman who almost killed her. But abandoning the boy to a system she barely survived is not an option. Will Blackheart has lost everything. His SEAL team, his country, and—upon occasion—his mind. Worse, he’s lost something that has the capacity to kill thousands. Left for dead in the Afghan desert, Will has risen solely to regain that which was taken...and to punish those who dared take it.His only lead is the son of a dead woman. Her only goal is to save a child. As they come together in a clash of anger, mistrust, and potent, unwanted desire, Will and Cheyenne must put aside their differences and navigate the endgame of a woman for whom nothing was taboo…A steamy thriller with characters you won't forget…romantic suspense at its best.★★★★★"Isn’t it wonderful, as a reader, to pick up a book you are skeptical of and find yourself in the hands of an expert lover of words?"  ★★★★★"Gripping.  Dark.  Beautiful."

Awesome read.

Couldn't put it down! Wonderful world creation, characters are just bizarre enough to be believable and addictive. Plot is twisty and it pulls you in and won't let go till the very end.

OUTSTANDING SUSPENSE. YOU WON’T BE SORRY.

The opening paragraphs in the preface are not something that will encourage you to continue reading. It was all factual monotony and boredom giving the reader an idea of the vitriol Cheyenne carries 24/7 and it took forever to make any sense or even come to a point. Yet I persevered and slowly, like molasses running up a tree, it began to form some sort of beginning. Stick with it because it gets good. By ch.5, I was fully invested and then I noticed I was reading slower so it would last longer. This story rotates around three broken and damaged people. #1. Will Blackheart, a lethal, cold former navy SEAL who’s unit is betrayed and killed and he’s left for dead in the Afghani desert. He’s on a mission of destruction, vowing to avenge the deaths of his comrades. #2. Cheyenne Elias, brutally abused from the onset of her life and now wanting nothing more than to live in seclusion. Add #3…a 10 y/o neglected and unwanted, abused orphan boy who is more an adult than a child…who was never given the childhood due all children. Rafe is left in the guardianship of strangers. All three are brought together by odd circumstances and together they set out to solve a dangerous mystery. As the journey progresses, Cheyenne’s reality becomes clear. I especially admired this authors ability to delve deeply into the psyche of each character and make it not only believable, but utterly interesting. I appreciated that this wasn’t sex sex and sex. It’s first and foremost an awesome suspenseful drama with a small side of soft romance. I loved that it was a slow burn. This is a story of vengeance, blackmail, corrupt politicians, and treason and I couldn’t be more proud to recommend it.

Good story - well written

I appreciate a well written story and have been looking for something to give me a break from the current crazy life we are experiencing with the pandemic and politics. I liked the characters! This story was just what I needed, thank you so much.

Enjoy the ride.

Great Story

This is a the book about Cheyenne and Will. Will is military and has some baggage from war. His answers are with a little boy. Cheyenne is bequeathed a child from her enemy, they were at one time friends until she was betrayed. This is such a wild ride and the emotions it invokes in you. This is truly a well written book with fabulous characters. This is a must read.

The Bequest

Hope Anika is a new author to me and she definitely impressed me. The story line description caught my attention and it sounded like a good read. There's twists and turns that keep you turning the pages wanting more of the story. The characters are well developed and each have their own realistic issues they are working through. I definitely recommend and will be looking for more from this author.

Great story

This was a really good mystery romance. The storyline was believable and intricate and the characters were both strong and beguiling. The ending could have been better without the 10 pages of sex.
