Charlie Brown once said, “Incidentally…, what is Happiness…?”
Seeking an answer to Charlie’s question, I searched the Amazon Web Site, and then ordered a copy of Matt Tracy’s newly released book, “Happy Here And Now: Lasting Happiness You Can Count On.” I am VERY glad that I did.
While awaiting the arrival of Mr. Tracy’s book as a part of my quest to seek the answer to Charlie Brown’s question, I reminded myself that none other than Thomas Jefferson schooled us that we all are entitled to “Pursue this Happiness thing” that Tracy seemed to be alluding to. Recalling that Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence that “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that All Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with inalienable rights, and that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.”
As an aspiring student of History…, I was wondering why, some 250 years before Matt Tracy’ entry into this field, Jefferson in the Declaration seemed to focus on this “Pursuit of Happiness” thing as an inalienable right…? In delving into the answer to this question, I discovered that Jefferson was, apparently, also an ardent student of History and was a strong devotee of the Greek Philosopher, Epicurus. As a part of my search, I happened upon a noteworthy Doctor of Philosophy, Mark K. Sutton, CEO & Founder of <Pursuit-of-Happiness.org> Group, who notes that “there is strong evidence that Jefferson was an Epicurean, stating ‘I AM’ and Epicurean’”
Sutton writes: “It may come as a surprise to some, but there is strong evidence that Jefferson was an Epicuran.” Jefferson, according to Sutton in his Web Site, “Pursuit-of-Happiness.org” underlines “the gentle Moral Philosophy of Epicurus, that rejects over indulgence and leads to peace of mind.…” And, Sutton mentions that it is Jefferson in “a note to a colleague, where he outlines a syllabus that includes this topic: ‘Happiness IS the aim of Life!’”
So…, what does all this have to do with Tracy’s book? Well…, Shakespeare reminds us that “What is past is prologue…!” Prologue…, in this case that is…, to Tracy’s book, “Happy Here And Now: Lasting Happiness You Can Count On.” While I believe Tracy would agree with Jefferson’s emphasize that “the pursuit of Happiness is an Inalienable right”, Jefferson does not provide the individual with a Road Map, a User’s Guide, on how to “Pursue Happiness.”
Matt Tracy does provide just that…, a ‘Road Map’, that ‘How To - User’s Guide’ on how to successfully “Pursue Happiness!” I STRONGLY recommend Mr. Tracy’s invaluable daily guide book, offered in the spirit of a ‘new age’ Epicurean – Shakespearean - Jeffersonian guide to ‘BE or NOT TO BE…’ “Happy Here And Now…”, ‘that is the question…!’
